Pre-orders behind a paywall

Pre-orders behind a subscription... that left a sour taste. It feels unfair to regular players.

A frustrating change

The staff were kind, but putting sought-after preorders behind a subscription made the whole local-player setup feel unfair.

Disappointing

Disappointing The way that TCG events are handled is a joke, almost as if the owner doesn't care about anything but the money. The products are overpriced but with the introduction of their 'Patreon' its beyond a joke. The staff are the only redeeming aspect of the store, so to throw them under the bus for the owners own mistake makes me question how the business has even stayed afloat. And don't get me started on the vending machine..

Been a long term customer at the store…

Been a long term customer at the store and have been very disappointed about the treatment of the TCG players, Locking Pre-orders of products behind paywall, not listening to staff and players, high mark up on products and only caring about players that spend high amounts of money in store. Staff are generally lovely, layout is good but the owner has been very unhelpful and willing to trade their loyal customers for a quick payday. (I would rather get my products from a local game store that appreciates it's players that have been coming in for years)

Embarrassing handling of TCG communities .

As a (former) long term attendee to EG playing several different TCGs under its roof, it's always been blessed with welcoming, friendly and fun self sufficient communities that truly make attending it a joy. The stock is typically varied and majority of the staff are helpful and pleasant to interact with. So why the one star? Well EGs flaws begin to show when you are a regular. Unfortunately as a local tcg player the owner has openly admitted to not caring about your business. As such you can always expect to be treated poorly, squeezed for money and watch as your product gets sold to the highest bidders from out of town (scalpers). This is all but confirmed and supported by the stores baffling decision to lock product behind a patreon, which naturally will be gobbled up by those with liquid income looking to flip to your children at an elevated price for a quick buck. What probably compounds this issue even more, is if you point this out to the owner you will be met with a condescending attitude and be told that you are stupid, wrong and exaggerating. This is no surprise though as the owner has always had an awful demeanour to customers and quite frankly wouldn't last a couple of days in any customer facing role, were they not the owner of the business. There are so many local stores in nearby towns that care about their players and understand the benefits of having blossoming local communities, unfortunately at EG these are seen as a nuisance and unnecessary overhead. Please do yourself and the TCG community a favour and take your business elsewhere, you will likely find better prices anyways. Yesterday marks the last day that a popular (40+ person Yu-Gi-Oh) locals will walk through the door, as the player base has had enough of the treatment and disrespect they have received. Surely the others will soon follow.

The final straw..

I’ve been coming to Eclectic Games for about 2-3 months now, and while I have to state clearly that the floor staff are absolutely lovely, I can’t give this store more than one star based on how it's being run. On a minor note, there’s an ongoing joke about the downstairs vending machine being "out of order" and empty for ages. It’s funny at first, but it gets annoying quickly when you have to leave the building during an event just to buy a drink, even if it's only around the corner. But that’s a minor inconvenience compared to the management decisions. The entirety of our Yu-Gi-Oh! locals, including our judge, has officially left. During COVID, YGO locals were cut from twice a week to just once on Thursdays. We understood the reduction at the time, but the second day never returned. What finally killed the community was the bizarre decision to launch a Patreon. The wording of the whole thing comes off weird and feels like a massive slap in the face to loyal customers. The £3 tier, for example, is essentially a donation that promises "Warm and fuzzy feelings" and asks you to pay to "Keep the Staff in Snacks!" For an established business, it’s a strange look. Then there’s the £7.50 tier they actually recommend, which gives you £1 off your entry fee. For YGO players who only have four events a month, you are quite literally losing money by subscribing. The worst part is the pre-order paywall. For £12.50 (and climbing up to £21 for the Pokémon version), you buy into a tier boasting: "Your chance for guaranteed Pokemon preorder products at RRP PLUS four (4) FREE tickets to either Thursday's Locals or Friday's After-School Club...". Locking highly sought-after pre-orders behind a monthly subscription doesn't help loyal customers; it just encourages scalpers. (They also conspicuously left YGO out of these product tiers entirely). Our judge actually tried to warn the owner that this Patreon would not go down well and that players were going to quit over it. Instead of listening, the owner doubled down and completely ignored the judge, refusing to even reply to their concerns. It feels like management didn't take us seriously and assumed we wouldn't leave simply because they are the only local store in Reading. They were perfectly happy to just watch their entire YGO player base walk out the door. I hope whatever money they squeeze out of this Patreon is worth permanently losing ~20 weekly players who were happily paying £7 an entry. The floor staff are fantastic, but terrible business practices have completely alienated and destroyed an entire local community.
